All the bells and whistles

Posted on Sun Mar 10th, 2019 @ 3:48am by Commander Leigh Jacobs

Mission: From the ashes...
Location: Starbase 239; Docking Ring
Timeline: Before "The Marines have landed"

Leigh stood on the observation platform as she watched the newly commissioned Luna Class vessel was towed into docking position from the maintenance dock. A smile formed as she saw the registry number and name on large black letters and numbers on the hull. NCC-4698-A USS Valiant. 'Wow, she's big,' Leigh marveled, having grown used to the much smaller Defiant Class.

"Fresh from the construction yards. She's a beauty, isn't she?" came the russian-accented voice of Admiral Viktor from behind her.

"You can say that," she turned, smiling at the man. "At least I'll have a bit more privacy," she joked.

"That you will, Commander," Viktor said, stepping next to Jacobs with his hands clasped behind his back. "I'll tell you, Leigh," she said warmly. "You have had a tough past few months. Most in your position would have given up. But not you."

"I learn from the best," Leigh turned, smiling at the older man.

"Ha! You've always had that never give up spirit within you--you especially showed it on Cardassia Prime," Viktor stated.

Leigh turned with a surpise on her face. "I didn't know you were on Cardassia Prime as well."

Viktor nodded. "I was. I was leading a specialized group designed to meet with and organize the Cardassian Resistance, and I remember seeing a young Marine Corporal braving Jem H'Dar fire to rescue an injured Marine. After the war, I remember see that same young Corporal applying for the Academy. I knew then you would make a fine commander someday and an even finer officer."

"You make me cry, I'll kick your ass," she chuckled.

Viktor laughed loudly. "You are more than welcomed to try. I may be old but I still have a few tricks up my sleeve."

"I don't doubt it," Leigh replied. "Any word of Kalor?"

Viktor sighed. He knew Leigh had a personal vendetta against the woman who destroyed her ship. "No. But if she comes anywhere near a Federation Outpost, station, colony, or ship, we'll know. Starfleet Intelligence is actively looking for her as well. It's only a matter of time. Until then, just make sure everyone that gets on that ship," he said pointing to the Valiant-A. "Undergoes the new security screenings."

"You can count on it, sir," Jacobs replied, turning her attention back to the new Valiant. "Oh, I want a Marine Detachment, Special Forces capable on the Valiant."

Viktor raised an eyebrow. "You will be hard pressed for room with the civilians aboard."

"The only civilian I plan to have aboard is Valywen. Marines can be more useful than civilian specialists and I want to be fully prepared for any possible scenarios," Leigh explained.

Viktor nodded as he was never a fan of having civilians aboard starships. "I understand. I'll see to it that you get your Marines. Anything else you might need?"

"No Sir. Not at the moment but I'm sure that will change." Leigh couldn't wait to tour the new ship.

"I am sure it will. Once you're ready for launch, there will be a ceremony to officially christen the new Valiant," Viktor stated.

"Understood, Sir. I'll get my crew together and start getting her ready to get underway," Leigh replied confidently.

"I hope you're alright with going back out there so soon..."

"But you need ships out there," Leigh finished. "You can count on me, Sir."

"I know I can," Viktor replied proudly. I will leave you to your thoughts. See you soon, Leigh."

"Aye Sir. Don't work too hard," Leigh replied. "And thank you, for everything."

"Don't mention it," Viktor replied as he turned, leaving Leigh alone at the observation platform.

Leigh recalled a poem that she read once:

Valiant are those whom take life and live it,
caring not of the dangers that may cross their path,
venturing to the borders
where life and death meet.

Bold are the warriors who cross the invisible lines
in the truth everyone seeks.
Hail to these heroes for within legends
they will never die.

Immortal are those who hide
within our imagination
and remind us always
that we could have been like them.

We are all valiant, bold and immortal
if one person remembers us
long after we have gone,
and our strength makes them carry on.

Leigh continued to smile proudly before tapping her comm badge. "Commander Jacobs to all USS Valiant Crew, begin boarding the new USS Valiant-A at Docking Port 23-Alpha. Once you undergo the security screening, report to your department head and get the ship ready for launch. Jacobs, out." Jacobs made her way out of the observation deck and towards the docking tube.
